Wondering if anyone could help me with advice on how to paint finished oak cabinets?

They look extremely dated in our house now and would like to paint them white. They have a frame around them, there is a clear varnish on them, already. Someone suggested skimcoating to me but I haven't been able to locate much information on what skimcoating is?

Any advice is great appreciated!

Thanks,
Smiles

The only way to get rid of the deep grain that is in oak you would need to skim a thin layer of wood filler over your cabinets before you paint. This would be done with a putty knife and then would need to sanded smooth and will take a good bit of time but the cabinets will nice and smooth without the grain showing up. If the grain does not bother you just skip this process.
