I just finished a five gallon job using Glidden paint(requested by customer). My question - why is it so cheap. It performed better that BenMoore Regal and covered just as well.

Well a paint manufacurer can make a paint cheaper by putting in cheaper pigments and less vechicle, and it will cover good and work good as well, but it will not have the durability of say a BMoore Regal paint. You could go to Ben Moore and buy their lower end at it wil work easier than the Regal line but it will not hold as well or as long. The lower end products often feel smoother and slicker under the brush and roller and this just because of the types of pigments used.

Hope this helps out and remember the best value is the better lines any company makes and especially on a repaint.

Could it be too that Glidden just makes a good can of paint for less? I have never been able to figure out why people always look for a deal on everything...except paint!

It is nice to hear that the Glidden product worked well. I have always liked and used Glidden products. Remember that Glidden makes product (as most manufacturers do - BM included) all over the price range - Ultra-Build at the low end ($5/gallon) - to Ralph Lauren ($22) at the higher end.

You will be pleasantly surprised to see that RL beats BM Regal all over the place - color, ease of use - and durability.......and it is considerably less money.........

How could that be?

Great chemists......and economies of scale that come with being the 3rd largest paint company in the world........

The Glidden Comany is like most paint companies in that they make more than one line of of say interior flat. I went to their web site and found that they make at least 5 lines of interior flat wall paint and there has to be a difference between these paints in durability and coveage. It seems that the Evermore line is the premium line and goes on down. But you see the Ultra Hide and Speedwall lines in Home Depot and from a price point they look good to a home owwner but they can't be as good as the Evermore.
I work for Duron Paints and we have 7 interior flat wall paints and believe me there is a big difference from the top to the bottom line.
You need to compare apples to apples to be fair and it depends on what you need the paint to do as to which one you would use. But on a residential repaint you can't go wrong with the premium line from pretty much any company.
