I am getting ready to have someone paint my family room/kitchen which is all an open area, and hall/foyer. I am getting overwhelmed on the brand of paint to use and whether to use Flat or satin. The areas are high traffic areas, walls tend to get dirty alot and need to be cleaned often, hall walls tend to get "banged up" alot. So far I have heard Finneran and Haley (type unknown) and Sherman Williams (EverClean or Super Paint. Another neighbor used MAB. I am so confused... Any ideas would be helpful.

You've just opened a big can worms. Let the fights begin. I personally like Sherwin Williams as I've had very good luck with their products and have always gotten good advice from them. I think if you stick to the paint stores like Benjamin Moore, MAB, F&H or Sherwin William, etc and Avoid the box stores like L O W E S and HD you should be fine. As for sheen, If you need washability go with a satin. If you need good hiding go with a flat. Just my 2 cents

Hi,you will want to use a satin, pearl,or an eggshell sheen.
We always use H irshfields top scrub paint it is a good quality paint at a really decent price. There are alot of other good brands out their too.
Those sheens mentioned are what different brands of paint put out has nothing to do with quality at all.Eggshell is a sheen above flat, then pearl and satin are both about the same sheen, all of which would be recommended for the ability to wash with.

You will want to use flat on the ceiling and a satin/eggshell on the walls if it is a high traffic area. As far as the brand just be sure it is their premium line as there are commercial grades of satin/eggshell and they will not be a durable as the premiums. You can't go wrong with Duron, Sherwin Williams or Ben Moore. But bear in mind if your walls are painted flat now it take 2 coats of any paint with a sheen to look even as opposed to maybe 1 coat of a flat but it will last longer and be a better value for your money spent to use the satin/eggshell finish.
