On interior stucco, what causes mold to start appearing on the surface? How can such mold be (permanently) be gotten rid of?

What factors need to be considered when thinking about re-stuccoing a house? I have a 60-year old house, the stucco is still in overall good condition; but there are a few hair-line cracks to be found here and there especially where the old and new parts of the house meet.
