I am trying to repaint my kitchen but for some reason whatever paint I use, the paint won't stick. I tried sanding the walls first, then applying oil based primer, but the paint can be easily scratched off. I also tried on one wall using paint thinner to clean I guess any oils or greese on the wall, then applying primer but it still does not stick to the wall. The biggest problem is that I am not sure what type of paint is there now, or how the kitchen was painted before. Whatever I try, the paint continues to peel off easily. What can I do? There must be something I can do to make the paint stick.

There is some type of contamination on the surface that is not allowing the new paint to adhear and it could very well be grease. I would wash the walls down with paint thinner and follow that with an ammonia and water wash to remove the grease. Then prime the entire surface with a pigmented shellac based primer such as Zinsser BIN which sticks to alot of difficult surfaces. The finish paint can be a acrylic semi-gloss or eggshell finish.

Hope this helps out.

Hi ClaireD,

Can you give a little history of the home/kitchen area?

* Age of home, age of existing paint-job, any kitchen remodeling, was any wallpaper ever painted over/removed...?

* How long were you waiting after application b4 trying scrape off the paint & primer?

* Normally, cleaning with Dirtex, rinsing, and letting it dry a day before priming does wonders!

* BIN primer from Zinsser adheres well to slicker surfaces. Fairly strong alcohol odor though...have windows open.

* Latex paints work just fine on this primer.

* Use a Satin or Semi-gloss (2 coats!!!) for Kitchen.

Let us know the details!
