I have an older house that has been resided multiple times. Currently there is a fiber board type of siding on the exterior. It is gray with an asphalt exterior and a low density type of fiber board. I would like to install new vinyl siding, but I feel I should remove the top layer of siding. My question is how do I know if my siding contains asbestos or is it only in cement siding?
The test for asbestos is simple and inexpensive. Simply take a piece of the material or core with the full depth. Deliver it to a local analytical laboratory (see yellow pages) and request a PLM (polarized light microscopy) test. Should be about $35. I agree with piffin on this. Is unlikely asbestos, and if it is, would be nonfriable with fiber locked into asphalt matrix.
