What's the trick to fixing squeaky subfloors without having to pull up the carpet?

If it's the first floor of the house, and you can go into the crawl space or basement, it's easy. You go under there, then have someone else "squeak" the floor from above. When you find the spot, insert a very thin wooden shim between the subfloor and the support joist. Fit it tight enough to stay in place, but don't force it so hard that it raises the floor in that spot.
