I've heard different stories about the cause of discoloration of asphalt shingles on house roofs. Also, read in the local newspaper that using a zinc bar at the peak will prevent this discoloration.

I'd like to know the real, final story. What is this stuff and how do you prevent it? I'm getting ready to replace my roof this year and I want a good job done.
