I have a concrete floor in my basement and I want to have carpet installed. The basement is dry and I am hoping to save as much headroom as possible. Can I place a thin layer of nailing strips and then apply tongue-in-groove plywood for my subfloor?
I have seen recommendations for 2x4 or 1x4 nailing boards, but I was hoping to save some money on lumber.
Any ideas?

You really do not need the plywood subfloor. You can lay carpet and apdding directly onto concrete. You would need to shoot the carpet-tack strips into the concrete along the sides with a special nail-gun designed to literally "shoot" nails into concrete. You can rent to guns or buy on for $75 or so.
Spend the money you would have spent on plywood on top-quality padding, and you will end up with a better feeling floor that if you laid plywood and cheap or ordinary padding.
