Our 40 year old, oak floors are squeaky. Seems to be coming from the oak, not the plywood sub floor or joists. Does oak dry out? How can I fix this problem?

Can the underside of the floor be accessed? If so, use wood screws from the underside that are long enough to go through the plywood but not so long they will go all the way through the flooring. Find the squeaks by having one person walk on the floor to locate the squeaks while another installs the screws to eliminate them one-by-one.

If Glenn's suggestions are not feasible sprinkle talcom powder in the open joints from time to time and pound it in with a soft rubber mallet.
