I've seen lots of advice/requirements for underlayment and subfloor thickness beneath ceramic tile floor. (e.g. total thickness not less than 1-1/4 inch). I will be placing ceramic tile over a structural insulated panel (SIP)floor system (1/2" OSB skins bonded to 6 inch foam). The question is, since the underlayment thickness is intended to limit deflections, can I safely use a 1/2 inch tile backer (e.g. HardiBacker 500) over the SIP. I believe the floor deflection will be less than the more typical inch of plywood plus tile backer. Am I missing something??? Thanx.

you may not be missing somthing but i am.why is this product being used as a subfloor?thats a new one on me. anyway you can't put tile over osb. you need a subfloor that you can glue and screw a backerboard to.ask the mgf rep.what you should do to prep this floor for tile. good luck
