Recently purchased a home that is sided in cedar. the previous owner stained with a very, very dark stain which has faded in the areas where it gets direct sun. I would like to change the color but do not know where to begin. Can the color be lightened, removed to natural, and/or over stained?

The only way to lighten the siding without removing the existing coating is to use a solid stain. You should check with your local paint store on their reccomended system as some solid stains are self priming and others need a primer.

A solid stain will last longer than a semi-tranparent stain but it hide the grain of the wood but not the texture.
