Uneven prefinished harwood
I'm going to cheat and have hardwood installed. The cost to have pre-finished installed is about $300 cheaper than unfinished. However, the installer has warned that there may be height variations, since it will not be sanded. I'm picturing this gap that I will stub my toe on each time I walk through. Is it that big of a deal??
It all depends on how flat your sub floor is. The finished floor will not be any better than what is under it. If the sub floor is in good shape with no bumps or humps you should be fine.

True, but there are a good share of square edge products that look downright ugly with the amount of "overwood" that's there. I call 'em sock catchers.
i think the answer is ,it is a big deal. as k.d. points out "sock catchers" can end up as splinters ,or worse you can yank out a chunk of wood...for $300 more you will have a smooth floor...good luck
Tracy,
I have never had the sock catcher problem that you are concerned about. Most manufactures of prefinished flooring either micro bevel the edges so there are no square edges. There are companies that make square edge prefinished flooring that is is amazingly flat. You pay the bucks for the extra care they use in the milling tho. Robbins is one company that makes a good prefinished square edge hardwood floor.
