My fireplace box is designed so there is a 4" sheet metal lip on either side and a 6" lip on top and bottom of the fireplace opening. These lips but right up flush with the backerboard I installed around it to repair the drywall I took out in demolotion. What used to be there was old man-made fake rock over lathe and mortar, and it was installed over the drywall and metal lip of the firebox. I am installing a mantel around the firebox, but would prefer to lay marble tile over the metal lip itself. Do I need lathe and mortar again, or can I adhere the tile directly to the sheet metal with thin-set or mastic? A new lathe will create a challenge for finishing the edge visible around the opening, but the mantel would take care of the outside of the surround. Thanks in advance for any advice you can provide.
