pulling up old carpet, wish to restore hardwood underneath.

hello, i am new to these boards. i am 19, and i am currently remodeling my room. the room is fairly small, just 10x12, and i am just wondering how to go about some things, and how much it may cost me. if anyone knows, i would appreciate any help!

my problem is this, i have no experience with carpet or hardwood. my plan is to pull up carpet that has been laid for nearly 20 years. underneath this carpet is hardwood floor. i wish to keep the hardwood, and not re-cover it. here are my questions:
1. what can i expect to find when i lift thet ancient carpet.
2. how do i go about restoring the hardwood floor (if i can at all)
3. how much time / money am i looking at here?

as i said above, i would appreciate any help that anyone may offer! thank you in advance, Kevin.

kevin.you find out what's under the carpet when you pull it up.but pull up the carpet ,pad and tac-strip,remove all the staples,then give the floor a realy good clean.then you will see what you have to work with....may times thats all you will need to do.a good paste wax will put a shine on the floor and fill the holes from the nails....good luck
