I am putting down tile in bathroom and plan to use 1/4" wonderboard on top of existing plywood. The plywood is not 100% level. Is it necessary to use thinset mortar between the plywood and wonderboard? Or, is screwing wonderboard to plywood sufficient? Thanks.

This question came up a while back. I believe the upshot of the discussion was that the thinset may not absolutely be necessary--but since it's such effort and money to put in tile, why not do as much as you can to have the installation be long-lasting and trouble-free.

Since using some thinset would add minimal cost, why not use it and get that level of added security?
