help! i have someone redoing my entire bathroom and everything seemed fine until he layed out the ceramic tiles for the floor. i noticed that there are hairline cracks all along the grout on almost the entire floor, by the way its my bathroom. what happened? is it because he didn't put down concrete and did it on plywood?

That certainly could be the case. Wood expands differently, so that can happen. Concrete board MAY have worked better. Either way, this should not happen, and he needs to fix it PERMANENTLY.

THANK YOU for the quick response. I was getting desperate. The guy is suppose to come over to finish the bathroom this weekend. I left him a message to call me today about it. How do i approach him about this situation? What should I say to tell him that he has to correct it? How does he have to fix it? Will the ceramic tiles need to be pulled up? Does that mean I need new tiles? I really appreciate your response.

tell him you think this is happening because of the underlayment, then ask why he thinks it is not, then check the tile institute for industry standards.
and of course keep us informed.

Hi Floorcraft,Thank you once again for responding to my questions. He came by yesterday and we looked at the grout carefully and we both came to the conclusion that the grout may have dried up too quickly because the areas with the hairline cracks were by the heating vent and my heat blares up there. the grout looked a little discolored too. so he's going to sand it down and regrout it. i'll have the heat off this time and we'll see if this was the culprit. what do you think?

well, I am confused, originally you said it was the entire floor, now it's just near the vent?
Maybe he is right, we will see huh?

sorry to confuse you. see that bathroom is still under construction and there's no light. so when i saw the cracks originally it was with daylight but not much. but last night i dragged in a lamp to look at the floor clearly and the cracks in the grout were on the half of the floor closer to the vent. thank you. i'll update with the final outcome on monday.
