Hello... I am in the process of building a new 2000 sf two-story house and was wondering whether to go with vinyl siding or cedar sidewall siding/shakes. To be honest, I absolutely detest the plasticky look of vinyl siding. However, I have heard that cedar siding/shakes are very expensive. But really, how expensive is cedar relative to vinyl? Twice as much? Three times as much? How much should a cedar siding/shake installation (with pre-treated wood) cost on this size house? The house is located on the east end of Long Island, New York. Thanks!

- Cedar siding/shakes vs. Vinyl Siding- Costs?
Hi,
What you will hear from any kind of builder is that exact prices are difficult to give. The cost of building materials varies from month to month, it is also highly dependent on where you live compared to the location of the materials.
Right now the price of wood is climbing. And with all the hurricanes in Florida, the demand for wood products will continue to rise.
Perhaps you may wish to check out some of the web sites listed on Bob Villa and do some reading.
Personally, I love wood over all other products, but sometimes you have to look at other options. You may wish to look at James Hardy siding since your home will be exposed to sea air.
Regards,
Kate
