Our framer advised that we need to prime or paint new drywall that will be tiled (i.e. where the counter backsplashes are). We're confused, though, as to whether this means we also need to prime the greenboard in the shower and tub surround that will soon be tiled over. Is this really necessary? What does it acheive?

He is right - but not right enough.

Greenboard is moisture resistant drywall for high humidity areas - not for wet areas. Tub surronds where shower water will be splashing and running regularly should be done with Durock or other cement board as a substrate for tile.

Place tile directly on greenvboard and expect it to fail sometime between three and twenty years later, depending on usage.

Excellence is its own reward!
