Any thoughts on this --

I would like to rip up the carpeting on my stairs and refinish them to match the rest of the house. There are (old) rubber treads glued on to each tread. With the exception of sanding them off, which I would rather not do for health reasons, are there ways to get these off? Any chemical strippers for example?
