After removing the carpet from the 5 stairs in my split-entry home, I was hoping to stain them to match the Pergo I installed in the living room. But, they look terrible and I think I will have to put a stair runner on them to cover them up. Dumb question, but how is the stair runner attached so it doesn't move around? Carpet tack strips? I was hoping to use an inexpensive runner I already have, but it is thin cotton/wool dhurrie type.

OK, does this mean tack it down, and then use stair rods as an optional decorative touch, or can I use the stair rods INSTEAD of tacking it down?
if you use only the stair rods, then you will be able to turn the rug every now and then to make it last longer.
If you tack it down, it will be permanent for the most part.

OK, got it. Wasn't sure if the stair rods would be sufficient to hold it in place, but it sounds like they will, plus it will be easier to upgrade to a nice runner later on. Thank you.
