I'm purchasing a used home and along all the edges of the wall to wall carpeting it has a dark area. I was told this is a chemical reaction that you see because the carpeting is a light beige. Is this true and is it dangerous? Is there anything that can be done? I thought the people did a poor job a vacuming and it was a build up of dust/dirt.

- Dark edges on wall to wall carpeting
Your carpet is acting like a filter. There are gaps in the edges of the wall, and air is coming up thru them, the dirt is getting trapped by the carpet. The only way to completely solve the problem, is to lift up the carpet, and caulk the space, then restretch the carpet back in place.
If you do not, then you will constantly be vacuuming the areas.
