I am currently remodeling a bath in my house. I will be installing tile for the bathtub/shower surround. What is the best backer board to use for the job and why?
There are tons of opinions out there. Often the "why" is because that's what we sell or that's what I usually use.
Durock and wonderboard - cement boards water resistant but not waterproof. Use a poly water barrier behind.Excellent history.
Hardibacker - Lighter weight product cement and fiber based. Also water resistant. Easier to work with.
Dens shield-gypsum based board with acrylic water proof coating. New but sounds like just inproved green board.
From the research I've done I'm leaning toward Durock. What's your opinion?

- backer board for a tiled bathtub/shower surround
durock is the best. we have been using denshield for a long time now no problems if you do use it on a outside wall you have to cut out the poly u cant have double moisture barrier. cannot use denshield on walls of shower if you have tile&mud base. hardy backer would not be my choice.
