My wife does womens fingernails for a living. I built her a new work station, she wanted to tile the top. Am I able to tile over the 3/4" plywood top, or do I need backerboard? I was not sure, since moisture is not an issue at her work station. The reason for tile is the nasty chemicals that these women use eat up plain wood counter tops...laminate is not an option (per the boss...her!!) Thanks for any help. Counter top is 20" deep x 5'x5' "L" shaped top.

Use the cement board, it will give you a better surface for bonding the tile with the thinset. Be sure to use a layer of thinset under the board also, combed with a 1/4" square notch trowel, the use galvanized roofing nails or backerboard screws. The nails might be better as you could use 1" long ones so they dont stick out through the bottom of the table.
