We had water come in and it crack the tile. The previous owners of the house laid the tile on particle board so the board expanded with the water. We are trying to fix the hallway and also tile right into the bathroom over hardwood. I am having a hard time getting everything to be the same height. The hardwood is 3/4 in, the kitchen next to the hallway is 3/4 in but we need to put 1/4 cement board on the hardwood in order to lay the tile. That makes the transition from the kitchen to the hallway 1/4 in too high. Please help me out if you can.

Simply put, the particle board must come out wherever it would be under the new tile and the hardwood must come out and be replaced with plywood before you can put cement board down. The hardwood slats will move independently of each other and are known as dimensional lumber. The movement inherent in dimensional lumber is too great to be compensated for by the cement boardand the result is the tile will soon crack or come loose.
