I am putting mosaic stone in my bathrroms. i am wondering is it necessary to put a hardibacker down in this area since it is not as walked on as much as if i was putting it in my basement. the floor already has laminate down on top of wood

YES, you must use a backer board OR uncoupling and load distribution menbrane.
