I am renovating a bathroom in a house that the around 30 years old. There is a ceramic tile border of one tile's width around the perimeter of the room. Several of the tiles are badly damaged, but I cannot match the tiles to the existing ones to replace them. I would like to remove the entire border without damaging the wallboard beneath it. How do I accomplish this task?

Depends on how well the tiles are adhered to the wallboard. Some thinsets will be guaranteed to take the wallboard off with the tile. But then again, that is their purpose, to make a strong bond and not make for quick and clean removal.
Try a 6 or 8" spackling blade and get it behind the tile using a hammer. Try to find a tile that is over a stud so the wallboard has some backing to support it as you exert pressure to pry the tile away. Once the first one is off the work the blade in from the side of the rest of the tile as well as the top. Go slow.
