I want to replace the carpet in my living room with a laminate floor. The carpet continues up the stairs from this room, but I want to keep the carpet here. How do I handle the transition of laminate to the first stair (carpeted) riser?
Any help here would be greatly appreciated.....Thanks.

Your carpeted riser should have around 12 to 15 staples at the bottom keeping it in place. Carefully pull the carpet up, put your laminate down (leaving a 1/4" gap) then restaple the carpet back down. You can use tiny tack nails if you do not have an electric staple gun.
your laminate manufacturer should have STAIR NOSING that matches the laminate flooring.
Install it per their instructions (usually by cutting off the existing stair nosing and glueing and/or nailing the nosing into place), then fit your laminate flooring into it. If you dont cut off the existing nosing, you have have an unsightly lip, plus since the existing nosing is probably round, cutting it off square giove the new nosing a firmer foothold.
when removing the carpet, make sure you leave the carpet long (at the top of the step) at the nosing/riser if its one continuous piece. If you cut it short you might have to piece the riser in if you do not have enough carpet to replace it whole.
then staple or tack it back into place after cutting to fit to the new nosing.
