I own a house with a concrete slab foundation built in 1981. Two years after construction, the shower stall pan was discovered to be leaking (probably from the time of construction) and was replaced. I now want to replace all of the shower tile with a new design (floor, walls and ceiling). In replacing the tile, do I also need to install a new shower pan? Because I suspect that it will involve a substantial amount of messy demolition, I would like to avoid installing a new shower pan if possible. However, I want to do the right thing - I am just not sure what the right thing is. What is the criteria for deciding whether to replace a non-leaking shower pan in connection with new shower tile installation?

Your pan is 25 years old. Time to rip and replace. I'm sure that there was no preslope put in back then so the old cement has been saturated since the day of the first shower. You would be foolish not to upgrade the plumbing water feed and fixtures in the shower given the opportunity of an open wall, so why do it halfway. Have the pan built correctly (see www.ontariotile.com) for building a shower pan. That guy harry makes it look simple
