A local Tree service is going to give me a load of tree chippings to use as ground cover in my yard. Q1 - is there a good type of wood vs a bad type of wood to get. Q2 - how close can I put it down next to the brick foundation of my house.

Tree chippings are prized mulch, Depending on where you live you could put it right up to the brick.
