Bvbasement
We purchased a house a few years ago and are finally coming around to getting estimates on finishing our basement. Basically, what the previous homeowners did is a conundrum. They started to finish the basement by installing studs and filling it in with blown in insulation. As a result, the basement is fairly cozy, even without drywall. The problem? They not only installed the studs flat (as opposed on the edge), but they spaced them about 30-36 inches apart. Each of the 4 contractors that I have spoken to thus far has pointed this out as a problem, but they were split in terms of what to do about it. Two of them suggested building walls in front of the existing ones, utilizing the insulation that is already blown in, the other two suggested I tear it all out and start from scratch to ensure that the walls as even and solid as they can be. I do understand that logic, but find it hard to think about ripping out the good insulation that would cost a small fortune to replace. I'm looking for some arguments either way. Thanks!

You got me confused now. What is on the 2x4s now holding the insulation in?

When you say blown in insulation, do you mean expanding foam?

Greetings,

It sounds as if the 2x4's were put in place for the insulation only, not for framing. I would agree with the contractors saying that the best practice would be to frame a new wall and leave the insulation and 2x4's in place. You will only lose an inch and a half or so, and the new walls will add a layer of insulation as well.

Good luck and happy remodeling!
