Hi,

My house has asphault-type shingles for siding, and im experiencing a hole in the siding.

Was hoping I could get some suggestions on repair.

The "shingles" are not installed like roof shingles, where they are overlapped. These are square pieces and are not overlapped.

There is a paper backing of some sorts under the top layer of the shingle, and they are nailed into the side of the wall.

If anyone has any suggestions I would appreciate it!

Thanks!

Not much you can do unless you have some extra laying around. I don't think they even make that any more. It was popular in the 50s and 60s before aluminum siding and then vinyl siding of today..If you want a temporary repair cover it with a piece of T1-11 or something and caulk around all 4 sides,at least it will keep the water out.

They call it Ghetto Brick.

I would consider getting a new siding. Using Ghetto Brick not as popular now as a normal vinyl siding. You should talk to a local Vinyl Siding Contractor for an estimate on new siding.

I think that you should talk to a Vinyl siding contractor about your situation. Remember to get more than one quote from your Indianapolis Vinyl Siding Contractors and don't just go with the cheapest. Make sure they are a quality company and research them too.

Vinyl siding is just as "ghetto" as that stuff. If you cover it with vinyl, it will still be a horrendous fire hazard and won't even last as long as that asphalt stuff. If installed properly, Hardiplank, stucco or brick veneer will actually last and make your house look respectable.

Why is it that people who sell vinyl siding love to use expressions like "the way to go". I guess it draws attention away from the way this product will look after 10 or 15 years. Though some vinyl jobs keep their original look for their 25 or 30 year expected life, many just start to look like crap after a few years. They warp, fade and collect dirt. It is very rare for a vinyl-sided neighborhood to look good for long, half the houses end up looking ragged, with green slime and mildew growing up their sides. "the way to go" indeed.
