Project: Victorian Kitchen & Bath Remodel, Episode 4, Part 1
Bob reviews the Georiga-Pacific veneer board, designed to take a light plaster coat for a hard, elegant finish. Next, Bob observes the installation of WarmZone radiant floor panels under white oak from Bellawood. Outside, contractor Tim Berky digs four-foot holes to protect the footings and piers from frost and heaving, once the concrete is poured and set in the innovative PVC forms.

- John Martin (from WarmZone) is on-hand to show Bob how the medium density fiberboard (MDF) faced with reflective aluminum shielding, and precut channels for the Pex hot-water tubing, comes together to create a layout for the in-floor radiant heat system.

Bob undertakes the partial remodeling of a historic Victorian home in Rowley, MA. The house is a classic New England gem with many partitioned rooms, a large yard, and preserved wetlands beyond. The owners want to make their home more family friendly, and to open it up for casual entertaining. The architect helps create a design that works for the house and the family. From permits and approvals to the addition of a mudroom and a deck to the installation of cabinets and cozy radiant heat, this project focuses on family space. Appliances are modernized and updated, while architectural details like the Queen Anne window, reproduction trim, and copper roof are added to restore the original character to this historical beauty.

Bob is in Rowley, MA for the partial remodeling of a Queen Anne Victorian in the town's historic district. Homeowner David Masher and architect Greg Colling explain how the addition will follow the linear plan of the home, and will ultimately lead onto a new deck, regraded back yard, and landscaped side yard. Outside, contractor Tim Berky gets approval to dig and starts preparing the addition's footings. -
Episode 2 - Foundation Work, Roofing, and Installing French Doors
Description:
Bob and contractor Tim Berky review the newly poured foundation that's been pointed in order to blend with the existing Victorian foundation. The new 5' x 16' mudroom addition is framed and topped with a hip roof that will be sheathed in copper. Also, Berky and his crew install new Pella French doors. These solid-wood framed, double-paned, argon-filled, low-e glass doors let in light, retain warmth, prevent heat gain, and have a triple-latch system for added security. -
Episode 3 - Exterior Trim and Spray-Foam Insulation
Description:
The Queen Anne Victorian addition is ready for clapboard siding to match the existing façade and trim. Inside, the demolition is complete, the chimney stack has been removed, and a custom steel structural support has been placed where the load-bearing dining-room wall once stood. Insulation specialists explain, and begin to install, the expanding foam, closed-cell insulation. Outside, contractor Tim Berky completes a custom backerboard and transitional bed molding to match the original 1890s molding. -
