Installing Marble Kitchen Countertops

Project: Modern Colonial, Episode 16, Part 4

Bob focuses on the work being done in the kitchen. First, Darcie Miller from Wellborn explains the cabinet layout and outlines the design plan. Then, carpenter Paul Anderson starts the installation, while Bob is joined by John Wellborn, who talks about the cabinets themselves.

Later, Bob discusses the countertops with Evan Zgonis from Olympia Marble and Granite, and takes a tour of their fabrication center. Finally, the new granite countertop is delivered to the jobsite and installed.

Part 4: Installing Marble Kitchen Countertops
Evan Zgonis and the crew form Olympia Marble and Granite are installing the marble countertops in the kitchen. The slabs weigh about 300 pounds apiece, so the crew takes extra care in lining each piece up correctly. Once each slab is in place, a bead of silicone is applied to the bottom to secure it. In addition, a silicone-based sealer is applied to the top to help prevent staining.
This project focuses on the construction of a Colonial-style home built with both history and the future in mind. While the 4-bedroom, 4-bath home will have a traditional exterior and interior detailing, the plan will suit the needs of a modern family, including easy-maintenance fireplaces, a great room, master suite, sun room, 3-car garage, and a large walk-out basement with plenty of room for recreation and indoor/outdoor living.
