Tour of the Restored Victorian Front Porch and Garden

Project: Elmwood Neighborhood, Episode 7, Part 4

At the sixth Elmwood neighborhood project house, Bob meets Berry-Jean Murray and Celeste Duclos, the owners of a Victorian home with a front porch under restoration.

Carpenters Bob Ryley and Terry Bates are underway doing demolition work and have removed the porch's old columns. Next, the new decking is installed, along with new columns and railings.

New lighting will be put in, as well a new alarm. Plus, landscaping work is being done, and a new sprinkler system being added.

Additional information is available about creating custom millwork for your own restoration project. Preventing carpenter ants and controlling termite infestation are also covered.

Part 4: Tour of the Restored Victorian Front Porch and Garden: Once the boxwood bushes are delivered, the landscape is complete. On the porch, Steve Moore (from Architectural Brass) installs the polished, antique hardware on the front door.

Forester Moulding and Lumber has milled new balusters and railings. The finishing touch is replacing the missing curved balustrade on the second story of the house.

A newly planted rose garden in front of the house complements the herringbone walkway and the overall design of the entrance to the house.

The theme of community building in the historic Elmwood neighborhood of Providence, RI, is the focus of this project. Rather than tackling one house, Bob Vila is helping 11 neighbors tackle smaller projects like porches, kitchens, bathrooms, and even a third-floor artist's studio.

In addition to a granite countertop, new Whirlpool appliances are installed. Bob visits Pat and Roger Simons, homeowners undertaking a bathroom renovation. The plan is to redesign the layout, but keep some of the original features-- the mosaic tiles in the floor, for example. Bob helps Terry Bates (from Mult-R) with the demolition, and carpenter Bob Ryley is on hand to help with the insulation. A new tub is put in, along with a new stackable washer/dryer. Lighting designer Markus Earley talks about the lighting in the new bathroom, plus an innovative hydronic heating system. Last, Bob goes to Pat's studio, where her daughter, PK, is helping create a beautiful tile mural that will go in the shower.
