Installing a Central Vacuum System

Project: Modern Colonial, Episode 14, Part 1

Mechanical systems are being installed throughout the project house. Specifically, low-voltage Category 5 wiring for voice and data systems is being run in the home.

Erling Andersen of A.I.M. Radiant Heating is on-site to talk about the "Boiler Room in a Box" radiant heating system, as well as a new central vacuum system being installed. At a separate location, Bob meets with Jeff Van Sloun to learn about Owens Corning's Basement Finishing System. Once the basement system is in place, a new Kahrs floating floor system is installed.
Part 1: Installing a Central Vacuum System
Ron Boffoli from Cape Cod Vacuum Supply is on-site installing the components for a central vacuum system. Bob joins as Boffoli is securing a section of the system's plumbing, and attaching a room inlet onto a stud.

The system consists of a network of PVC pipe that is connected to outlets throughout the house. The entire system is powered by a twin-motor vacuum system that is installed in the basement.

Part 3: Installation of Laminated Engineered Wood Floor System
This project focuses on the construction of a Colonial-style home built with both history and the future in mind. While the 4-bedroom, 4-bath home will have a traditional exterior and interior detailing, the plan will suit the needs of a modern family, including easy-maintenance fireplaces, a great room, master suite, sun room, 3-car garage, and a large walk-out basement with plenty of room for recreation and indoor/outdoor living.
