Patching With Plaster

Project: Victorian Restoration, Episode 9, Part 3

New pavers are laid down in the driveway outside the barn. Brian Kallmeyer and Nick Pastore (from Unilock) explain how to properly install the stone. Out back, Bob gives Charlie Tomaszewski a hand building a brand new mahogany deck. Upstairs in the main house, veneer plaster is being applied in the bedrooms. Finally, new barn-style doors are installed in the converted dairy storage building.

Part 3: Patching With Plaster
Chris Borovka (from US Gypsum) joins Bob explain about patching with plaster. The first job entails patching over an existing door opening. After putting some Imperial Gypsum base on the existing door frame, and patching the existing hole with diamond veneer base coat, the contractors put pressure-sensitive fiber tape, P-Tape, over the area before bonding the entire surface.

Where the wall meets the ceiling, the contractors apply pressure-sensitive tape to the existing surface and butt it in, while applying the first coat of base coat. This first coat provides a nice even scratch coat. The second coat should be applied while the first coat is still fully wet. It serves to take out some the bad dips and dives and trowel marks from the first coat, leaving a nice smooth finish.

The next day, the contractors will put the finish coat over the base. Where the insulators drilled holes into the original walls, the plasterers put the Plaster Bonder Pink. And they will mesh over the top of that for extra security, then bond over the whole surface. On blue board, it would be a different type of installation.
Part 4: Replacing the Barn Door
Located just five miles from downtown Boston, Bob's scouts discovered a Victorian-era house in a neighborhood of family homes on tree-lined streets that was past due for a full-scale renovation.

The home's new owners, a work-at-home family, have set goals to modernize the home's floor plan, update the building's mechanical and electrical systems, and add home office and work spaces for two busy professionals.
