Soundproofing with insulation

Hi Blanche, Sorry for the delay, could not see you with
all the John 2000's around.
Lets start in the bedroom, items you will require
are plasterboard ( I think you call it drywall??)
is 1/2" thick and 2ft wide and as long as you like,
and 3"x2" plained lumber (nice word that)now lets say
from the floor to the ceiling is "X", find the center of
wall (left/right)the center is important, screw a 3x2 at
the center, the 2" side to the wall dont forget the wall
plugs, make sure it is upright with a level.
The 3x2 should be 5" shorter that the X, fix the 3x2 leaving
2"1/2" from the bottom and top, do the same at both end of the wall
ie: in the corners, so now you have three timbers, one on the left
one on the right and one in the center...
Now fix a rail (3x2) long the bottom ( take off the plinth first), the
run a rail along the top screwing as you go,.
From the center rail, find the center, mark it with a pencel line top to bottom.
from that line go 2'(24") to the left fix a rail ( hart to hart) do the same on
the right till you run out of wall."you should have at the ends a smaller space
(less than 2ft)it's good, if you have a larger space then fix a rail, at 2"
By now you should have a frame fixed on the wall, standing out 3".
If you have electric wall plugs (GET A ELECTRICAN TO REFIX THEM)
My motto is "if you cant see it then dont go near it".
The timbers of 3x2 at 2ft centers are important, they will be where
the panels fit together, thats why they should be 24" hart to hart.
Next. in between these rails you will have to fix more 3x2 at the 12"centers
they are to stop the panels from bending in.
In between the rails you place the insulation, Fibreglass/Rockwool.
the insulation should be 3"thick, if you can only get it at 4"thick
then no problem,if you use the white polystrine, its ideal for cold
but not for sound, push it in tight and make sure you have no spaces
(sound will come through),.
Before you start to fix the plasterboard go to the center rail and messure
from the hart and see how it comes at the end by the wall, if not good
then start (from the hart again) 12"and then 2ft and see how it comes
at the end by the wall.you can move it to suit your self.
screw the panels where they come together about 8" apart, then do the same
with the centers of the panels ( trick- put some bits of tape on the floor
where your rails are, do the same on the ceiling or just a little pencel mark
will do,thats so you can find the rails later to screw to.
Fill in the joints and sand smooth paint or paper
dont forget to put back the plinth.
