I had pretty good luck using soapy water, letting it soak then using a scraper and hammer to remove the mastic. You may not need to remove the mastic at all if you are setting tile in thinset. Verify that the thinset will adhere to the existing glue by doing a test. The mastic holding down the old hardwood floor should be level enough for the tile application.
