refinishing kitchen cupboards

Cupboards are made of ribbon mahogany plywood. They have been finished in some kind of varnish or urathane. The pulls have a large circular back and we are removing them to put more modern pulls. Finish under the old pulls is much darker. How can I get the whole cupboard a similar color and what should be used to refinih the after that it completed. Thanks loads!
