I think you mis-read Davids comment. Plywood is in every way a superior sub-floor compared to OSB; however he is saying to use a T&G (in either plywood or OSB) rather than a straight cut sheet material. The spacing is required for any subfloor system to prevent squeeking or possible lifting with moisture changes.
