Some of the websites I visited talk about turning the power off, closing the inlet water supply and opening the relief valve before draining. I have a water heater (gas) that is 3 years old and plan to drain it for sediment build up. The water temperature is slightly lower than it was a year back for the same setting and I am not sure if the previous owner ever drained the tank. I only plan on draining a few gallons - Do I have to turn off the power supply or can I just open the drain valve directly?
