Asbestos in tile?

I tried to remove what seemed like "plastic" tile from our basement floor so linoleum could be laid. I had a hard time getting it up--asking around for suggestions, someone said that it could contain asbestos. So now we're sitting here with half tile/half cement, wondering what we have to deal with. Someone suggested a tile stripper. How long does this "asbestos stuff" stay in the air? I'm not worried about myself so much, but I think about my kids.
