All these are acceptable methods; it really depends on the carpet & which you prefer. If you use adhesive you'll also want to use a few tacks or staples to ensure edges do not curl loose.
If you're carpeting treads only, wrapping under the nose & stopping, tack or staple the carpet to the underside of the nose first, then pull the carpet tighly back to the riser above while securing it.
