Craftsman 1/2hp Belt Dr Gar Door Opener

5-yr-old 1/2 hp belt drive garage door opener has opened beyond the upper stop and is now jammed. We cannot find owners manual. Any advice on proper way to unjam it and to prevent this from recurring? Thanks.
