Well, OK, after reading quite a few posts regarding the disadvantages of painted brick you all have convinced me not to paint my livingroom's brick fireplace wall. :-) So what's the best way to clean the brick and mortar to get rid of the old, dusty, sooty look and refresh/enhance the color of the bricks? The house is about 50 years old and I doubt that any of the previous owners ever did a thing to maintain this fireplace wall, including cleaning it. It doesn't look as though any sealant or preservative has ever been applied, either...after cleaning it, do I need to apply any sort of sealant? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
