What you smell is sewer gas. And cleaning your pipe will not prevent the smell from coming back up into your home unless you have a trap in your pipe that holds water. Just look under your kitchen sink (or any sink) and you'll see one of many differnet styles of p-shaped or u-shaped traps. These traps hold water and prevents the smell from entering your home.
