Ceder shingles eliminating moss

I visted a freinds cottage and noticed she had a lot of moss growing on her ceder shingles.

I was wondering if should suggest she treat the shingles with a herbicide.

Is there a risk of the herbicide damagaing the shingles?

What is the best herbicide to use?

Will treating it with herbicide prolong the life of the shingles?

Is there anything else she can do to protect these shingles.
