If you don't feel like replacing the whole system, try replacing the button by the door. If it sticks, it keeps the solenoid that rings the chimes activated. This may burn out the chime unit. One other possibility is that a nail or screw might have been driven so that it is shorting out the wire (bridging the 2 copper wires). That would have the same result. When you remove the button, check to see if either of the wires are loose and could have touched the other terminal.
