Bob, Durock is a true cement board, while HardiBacker is a cement impregnated board. Both will work well for shower wall backer.

The Durock is generally a little harder to precisely cut & fasten without damage unless you're familiar with it.

Since the introduction of HardiBacker, I've pretty much totally switched to using the Hardi, with no regrets. Good luck
